Now, out of Co. Wicklow comes the Maguire Family. The family is another of those great Irish traditional music acts that seem to constantly spring up and keep the music vibrant–alive. Their new album is Little Giants and Other Oxymorons. We’ll be playing it a lot here on LiveIreland, and here is why. They are good. By that, we don’t mean “good” in the sense of cute or fun in a family way. We mean good. They broke onto the scene with a vid that went viral on YouTube. It features 10-year-old Sean walloping a mighty bodhran solo. That was followed up by an appearance on the popular Irish television program, The Ray D’Arcy Show. They also made a stunningly popular appearance at this year’s TradFest in Dublin, just a couple weeks ago. There are, indeed, lots of family acts in the business. Some are quite good, and some legendary, like the Mulcahys. Sisters Emma (16), Aoife (14) and father, Philip are on fiddle, concertina and guitar, respectively. This is really good, honest to God trad music played beautifully, and showing a maturity far beyond the siblings ages. We are recommending them strongly. And, keep your ear here on LI. As we said, you’ll be hearing a lot of them. Up Wicklow!
